BC - YUKON TOUR
8 to 9 days

Your drive will take you to Dawson Creek, Mile "0" of the Alaska Highway, 406 km/254 miles northeast of Prince George. Also known as the Alcan, the Alaska Highway was created by the threat of war in the 1930's and 40's. It is a marvel of engineering and of initiative.

You will find no lack of camping facilities along this route. Prophet River Provincial Park (350 km/217 miles from Dawson Creek) is the site of a small hot springs. Fort Nelson, 480 km/300 miles north, sits amongst dozens of rivers and several provincial parks.

Further north, Liard Hotsprings (314 km/196 miles from Fort Nelson), and Smith River Falls approximately another 40 km/25 miles north at the end of a gravel road just south of Coal River), offer refreshing pauses and captivating views.

At Watson Lake (707km/442 miles from Liard Hotsprings) the circle tour heads south into Northwestern BC along the Stewart Cassiar Highway (Highway 37). You will pass between Mt. Edziza Provincial
Park, a remote wilderness area that offers great nature viewing for the experienced hiker, and Stikine River Recreation Area, that sits at the head of Spatsizi Plateau Wilderness Park. Camping is available at Kinaskan Lake, approximately 50 km south of the entrance to Stikine.

A short side trip at Meziadin (202km/126 miles further) leads to the famous glaciers and grizzly bears of Stewart, BC and Hyder, Alaska.

Pleasant pastures roll upward to picturesque mountains above Bulkley Valley. The New Aiyansh area, southwest of Cranberry Junction (83 km/52 miles south of Meziadin) has BC Forest campgrounds.

Stop at Hazelton (43 km/27 miles from Meziadin) to see the totems that have made this town famous. Highway 16 will take you east to Prince George, where you can journey south by Highway 97, or
continue on to Dawson Creek, where you began.
